Maul-RoboGames2023

Maul prior to RoboGames 2023

Maul is a beetleweight class robot built by Lone Wolf Robotics that competes at Kilobots and RoboGames events. Inspired by the beetleweight HyperSchlock, Maul is equipped with a very large vertical spinning weapon consisting of a large double-disk weapon system mated to a brushless four-wheel drive platform. This weapon system has been shown to be extremely powerful in testing, but Maul has had very little success in its lifetime, losing basically all of its matches across four years of competing due to general unreliability and fragility.

In the first iteration, Maul was a two-wheel drive robot formed with a single sheet of titanium for its side panels, and the weapon was much further forward on outriggers, which proved too vulnerable to horizontals and were dropped in later redesigns.

Robot History[]

Kilobots XL[]

Maul-KB40

Maul at Kilobots 40

Maul's first opponent was veteran bar spinner Low Blow. Maul was barely to drive at all in this fight, as one of its drive wheels was scraping against its bottom cover. The first hit knocked the ESC of the one working wheel out of the reciever, leaving Maul dead in the water. Maul was promptly counted out and dropped into the loser's bracket.

Maul then fought fellow rookie EXERCISE RESTRAINT. Although Maul could drive properly, its weapon wasn't working from the start. Thankfully for Maul, EXERCISE RESTRAINT's weapon also failed within the first minute, and the fight devolved into a pushing match for the remainder of the time. In the end, the judges ruled in favor of EXERCISE RESTRAINT, and Maul was eliminated from the tournament.

Maul-wedge-KB40

Maul in its makeshift wedge configuration, used in its grudge match and rumble.

Maul wasn't finished yet, as it had a grudge match against EXERCISE RESTRAINT, as neither builder felt their robot had performed well in their tournament match. For this fight, Maul removed its now-broken vertical spinner, and was equipped with several sheets of titanium duct-taped to the front of the robot as a makeshift wedge, as well as additional 3d-printed ablative armor. A toy of Darth Maul was also taped to the back of the robot. In the end, after a double-knockout, the judges ruled that Maul had moved last, and it was declared the winner.

Maul returned for the beetleweight rumble, still sporting the same wedge setup and attached Darth Maul toy from its grudge match. Eventually it drove itself into the pit, and Wilson was in the end declared the winner of the beetleweight rumble.

Kilobots XLI[]

This event used a round-robin format for the beetleweight division.

In the first round, Maul fought Mega Don G and lost.

Next, Maul fought Excalibur and lost.

Then, Maul fought EXERCISE RESTRAINT and lost.

After that, Maul fought Reckoning and lost.

Maul's next opponent was NightWing. Maul lost this fight.

Finally, Maul fought Low Blow. Maul lost this fight.

Because Maul had won zero matches, it was seeded at as the #7 robot in the knockout bracket. As the #1 seed received a bye, it faced the #2 seeded Low Blow, and lost again, eliminating it from the tournament.

Kilobots 48[]

This event had two mini-tournaments, one on each of the days of the event. Maul entered both mini-tournaments.

On day one, Maul fought Reckoning. Maul lost this fight and dropped into the loser's bracket.

Maul then fought a similar four-wheel drive vert Salamander. Maul lost this fight and was eliminated from the tournament.

Maul returned on day two, and first fought Utopia. Maul lost this fight and dropped into the loser's bracket.

Maul then fought horizontal spinner The Butcher. Maul lost this fight and was again eliminated from the tournament.

RoboGames 2023[]

Maul first faced horizontal spinner Wormhole. Both bots knocked out each others weapons and one side of their drive, resulting in a pushing match. During this Maul gained the upper hand and it was looking like a close fight in Maul's favour until the bot experienced a mysterious power failure. Due to this Maul lost this fight and dropped into the losers bracket.

Maul next fought melty brain spinner Berserker, where it ended up heavily damaging the melty brains lid, causing one side to be hung up. However after an exchange Maul performed "The Thing" and was counted out. Maul lost this fight and was eliminated from the tournament.

Kilobots 49[]

This event was a round-robin event on the first day.

Maul fought Utopia. Maul lost this fight.

Maul faced off against undercutter Nightwing. Maul lost this fight.

Maul's next opponent was vertical spinner Full Send. Maul won this fight by knockout.

At the end of the first day, the results were that Utopia won all of its fights, while Maul, Nightwing, and Full Send were all 1-1. As a result, on the second day there was another round of round-robin to shake out the winners.

Kilobots 52[]

Event data is not currently available for this event, but it is known that Maul competed and it lost both of its fights.

Kilobots 51[]

Maul was originally registered for this event, however it dropped out as the builder could not get the time off of work to attend.
